South West Regional Waste Management Group
The South West Regional Waste Management Group is a group of eight (8) Councils working collaboratively together to manage waste within their individual local government areas.
The Council members are:
- Boorowa Council
- Cootamundra Shire Council
- Gundagai Council
- Harden Shire Council
- Tumbarumba Shire Council
- Tumut Shire Council
- Yass Valley Council
- Young Shire Council
The bulk of the putrescibles (municipal) waste from the Councils within the Group, with the exception of Boorowa, is sent to the Regional Waste Management Facility at Jugiong. Each Council is responsible for the implementation of recyclable and organics managements.
The Group has an agreement with the Regional Waste Management Facility operators, Ecofill Pty Ltd, at Jugiong. The Facility is commonly known as Bald Hill Quarry. The Group transports putrescibles from domestic collections to Bald Hill for disposal. Additionally, the operators, Ecofill are able to accept waste direct to their facility from consumers within the Local Government Areas of the eight (8) member Group Councils. At the present rate of disposal it is envisaged that this facility will have a further twenty (20) years life. However the rehabilitation of this facility and the ongoing monitoring is not something that will go away. Plans need to be put in place now to reduce the amount of material going to landfill in order to increase the life of the facility.
The Group has been formed to meet the growing physical, social, environmental and economic challenges of waste management for their respective local communities. The Group is bound by a common purpose and regional similarities with a commitment to implementing waste services by best practice actions and practical solutions.
