Gold Mining

Gold was first discovered in 1856 Four years before the rush at Lambing Flats, and mining flourished. Between 1913 and 1941, when most activity ceased, only small amounts were won. However, gold should not be written off as an industry without future prospects. Hundreds of square miles of the district are auriferous.

The best known deep shaft mines were at Cullinga, McMahons Reef and Harden. These mines ran into water problems and ores became difficult to treat, but these disadvantages can be overcome with our present technical knowledge.
